How the Reading Gym works

Early
(3.5 to 6)

We offer a structured and progressive phonics-based reading program to teach your child to learn to read, spell and comprehend. As an early reader, your child has just begun reading and it’s very important to ensure that their journey starts on a confident, exciting, and fun note! We will set you up with the right reading teacher matching your child’s level and your convenient time slots. Your child will start reading within the next few months. At the reading gym, we build the right foundation for your child’s reading journey and enhance their language skills. This will give them a headstart in reading.

Emerging
(5.5 to 8)

With the guidance of our trained, qualified, and super cool literacy teachers we build the excitement and love for reading in your child. We use 36 comprehension strategies & reading techniques to build fluency and help children skillfully read at an appropriate pace with modulation and intonation. With our guidance and techniques, they will be able to make inferences, recognize implications, and draw logical conclusions, resulting in stronger, deeper comprehension making them enjoy reading more and gain academic advantage.

Independent
(7.5 to 10)

This level focuses on comprehension, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. We do this by using an expertly compiled series of 25 exciting novels. Your child is trained to read texts with more complexity - novels with interweaving narratives that deal with many themes. So reading strategies required at this level are also deeper. Using prompts and simple creative activities, we introduce children to three types of writing - narrative, informative and persuasive. Our expert teachers provide constructive feedback on their content, choice of words, sentence construction, and organization, thereby grooming their skills to express their thoughts and ideas effectively.

What skills will your child learn in the Reading Gym?

Phonics & Decoding

Depending on the age of the child, Your child will start their reading journey by learning the relationship between letters and sounds. Each week they are introduced to a few sounds and their corresponding representation. Your child will learn to read sight words, as a whole, without sounding out or spelling them. In Reading Gym, we cover a comprehensive list of sight words and your child will learn these words by repetition and through games. As they progress, your child will be explicitly taught to decode unfamiliar words by breaking them into smaller parts, using phonics rules and syllabication strategies.

Spelling and Vocabulary

Books are the number one way to expose children to rich vocabulary.  At the Reading Gym, we use colorful pictures, exciting books, and creative activities to introduce and familiarize your child with a big bank of rich vocabulary. In every session, we introduce them to a vocabulary list and teach a combination of strategies to help them register and recall the new words. Along with vocabulary, we lay equal emphasis on spelling too. We teach spelling by asking them to listen to the word as a whole, segment them into sounds, and write them as letters. Spelling is a part of every session. Reading a variety of books across genres makes their world of vocabulary much bigger!

Fluency

Fluency is the ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression. Children who are not fluent readers, find reading very strenuous and end up not wanting to read. At Reading Gym, our expert teachers use our curated list of books, and specialized guided reading techniques to build fluency and help children skillfully read at an appropriate pace with modulation and intonation.

Writing

Reading Gym is the place to give your child a head start in writing. Using prompts and simple creative activities, we introduce children to three types of writing - narrative, informative and persuasive. Our expert teachers provide constructive feedback on their content, choice of words, sentence construction, and organization, thereby grooming their skills to express their thoughts and ideas effectively.

Comprehension

Comprehension is the ability to understand the deeper meaning of a text. From the given description, a good reader will be able to identify the character, setting, etc. At the Reading Gym, your child will be taught to think actively and deeply to comprehend at multiple levels, using 36 comprehension strategies. Classroom learning is accompanied by personalized comprehension worksheets to build critical reading skills. We prepare the child to transfer their reading skills to their approach to reading in different school subjects.

FAQs

How will my child benefit from the program?

Regular, consistent reading is like having a good, healthy lifestyle which will help them in the long run and give them a healthy future. Your child will develop a love for reading and building the habit can give your child a big academic advantage. Your child not only learns phonics, fluency and comprehension skills, but also builds a good vocabulary along with gaining knowledge from exposure to the vast variety of genres.

How much time will it take for my child to start reading?

If your child is an absolute beginner, he/she will begin reading simple 3-letter words within 3 months. Unlike the regular memorization method, the progress in phonics-based reading is exponential. Within 12 months, your child will be able to blend and read about 2500 words using the phonics methodology. Depending on the progress your child makes in our guided reading sessions, he/she will move on from an early reader to an emerging and then to an independent reader.

Will a 6 year old and an 8-year-old be in the same class?

Yes. We follow mixed group learning, like the Montessori environment. Children between the age group 6 to 9 work together. They read the same book and have a series of collaborative activities where the younger ones follow and imitate the behavior of the older children and the older kids lead and take responsibility for the younger kids. In this kind of environment, children have increased social and emotional understanding, they are more collaborative and appreciate differences. Though they are in the same group, their activities and prompts are differentiated based on their age and skill level.

Will children be reading using hard copy books?

In the class, your child will be reading the book digitally. But if your child prefers reading with a physical copy of the book, all the chosen titles will be easily available for purchase online or at a bookstore.
